Building a Home That Looks Collected. Not Decorated

Building a Home That Looks Collected. Not Decorated

Some homes look beautiful. Other homes feel like someone actually lives there.

The second kind is always more interesting.

A collected home isn't built in a weekend. It isn't ordered all at once from a catalog. It grows over time through stories, memories, discoveries and the occasional Facebook Marketplace miracle.

Mix Old and New

One of the easiest ways to create character is to stop making everything match.

Pair contemporary artwork with an antique chest. Place a modern lamp beside a vintage chair.

The tension between old and new, creates visual interest.

Perfection is overrated anyway.

Let The Art Lead

Artwork is often the most personal thing in a room.

Rather than choosing art to fit a space, try building parts of the room around the artwork. I've done this in every home we've had and it truly is the most fun to design a space around a favorite piece of art.

A painting can introduce a color palette, establish a mood, or become the conversation piece everything else revolves around.

Leave Room for Discovery

Collected homes aren't finished.

There's always a corner waiting for something special. A stack of books waiting to grow, a shelf waiting for the painting that hasn't found you yet.

Embrace a Little Imperfection

The most memorable rooms aren't flawless. They're layered.

They contain things that make absolutely no sense together on paper but somehow work beautifully in real life.

A little chaos gives a home personality.

Your Home Should Look Like You

Not a showroom. Not a Pinterest board. Not a trend forecast. YOU!

Your home should look like the books you've read, the places you've been and the people you've loved, and the stories you've collected along the way.

The art you choose becomes part of that story.

And that's what makes a house feel like a home.
